Ignition Coil: Testing and Inspection

SPARK PLUG WIRES

1. Check spark plug wires for broken insulation and spark plug terminals for corrosion or damage. Replace spark plug(s) as necessary.
2. Using a suitable ohmmeter and measure resistance of each spark plug wire. Resistance value is 16K ohms per inch.

IGNITION COIL

1. Disconnect electrical wiring, ignition coil and high tension cable (coil wire) from connector assembly.
2. Attach a suitable voltmeter at ignition coil positive (+) terminal and ground with ignition switch on.
3. Measure voltage level, which should read approximately 12 volts.
4. Disconnect coil primary terminal, then turn ignition switch to Start position and measure voltage at ignition coil negative terminal.
5. Check for a short in wires between battery positive and coil positive terminals if the two voltages are different. If test results are unsatisfactory. replace coil.
6. Reconnect electrical wiring and high tension cable.
