HEATER - HEATER CORE - SERVICE Article No.
REPLACEMENT PARTS 87-19-4

FORD: 1988 ESCORT, EXP, TEMPO, TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988 TOPAZ, SABLE, CONTINENTAL

ISSUE: Two types of heater cores have been used on 1988 Escort, EXP, Tempo/Topaz, Taurus/Sable, and Lincoln Continental vehicles. An aluminum or a copper/brass heater core was installed during vehicle assembly. All service replacement heater cores are the copper/brass type.

ACTION: If heater core replacement is required, the type of heater core can be identified by looking at the core tube after removal. Aluminum cores have tubes with a yellow coating, or an alloy coating that is aluminum colored. A copper/brass heater core will have brass colored tubes. If the vehicle has a copper/brass core, the heater core seal removed with the old heater core can be used if it is not damaged. Refer to the appropriate 1988 Car Shop Manual, Section 36 for service procedures.

NOTE: When replacing an aluminum heater core with a copper/brass service heater core, a new heater core seal MUST be used to make sure of satisfactory performance of the heating system.

Refer to the Master Parts Catalog for heater core and heater core seal part numbers.
