Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system.
2. Remove air cleaner duct tube.
3. Remove intake manifold as previously described.
4. Remove accessory drive belts. If front cylinder head is being removed, remove power steering pump.
5. Remove alternator/accessory support bracket.
6. Remove oil level dipstick and tube.
7. Remove ignition coil and bracket.
8. Remove exhaust manifold as previously described.
9. Loosen rocker arm fulcrum attaching bolt enough to rotate rocker arm so pushrod can be removed. Keep pushrods in order so they can be installed in original position.
10. Remove cylinder head attaching bolts.
11. Remove cylinder head(s).
12. Remove and discard cylinder head gasket(s).
13. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Lightly oil all bolts.
b. Torque cylinder head bolts as shown, Fig. 5. in two steps first to 33-41 ft. lbs., then 63-73 ft. lbs.
