Intake Manifold: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system.
2. Remove accelerator cable, air cleaner assembly and heat stove tube at heat shield.
3. Mark vacuum lines for reference, then remove necessary vacuum lines.
4. Remove Thermactor belt, hose and pump assembly. If equipped.
5. Remove exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold attaching nuts, then the manifold heat shroud.
6. Disconnect Exhaust Gas Oxygen (EGO) sensor wire connector.
7. Disconnect Thermactor check valve hose from tube assembly, if equipped. Then remove bracket to EGR valve attaching nuts.
8. Disconnect water inlet hose from intake manifold, then EGR tube from EGR valve.
9. Remove intake manifold attaching bolts, then intake manifold and gasket.
10. Remove exhaust manifold attaching bolts, then exhaust manifold.
11. Reverse procedure to install. Refer to Figs. 4 and 5, for tightening sequence. Torque exhaust manifold in two steps; first step 5-7 ft. lbs.; second step to 20-30 ft. lbs. Torque intake manifold to 23 ft. lbs.
