Balance Shaft: Service and Repair

Fig. 7 Balance Shaft Assembly:

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system.
2. Remove radiator, then A/C condenser (if equipped).
3. Remove grille.
4. Remove front cover and timing chain as described under FRONT COVER.
5. Remove oil pan as described under OIL PAN.
6. Remove balance shaft thrust plate, Fig. 10, then balance shaft from front of engine, ensuring not to damage bearings.
7. Reverse procedure to install. Lubricate balance shaft bearing journals with suitable lubricant.
