Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Check Engine/Malfunction Indicator (MIL) Light

- The Check Engine Light (CEL) is intended to alert the driver in the event of certain malfunctions in the Electronic Engine Control (EEC) system. The light will remain ON while the key is in the RUN position, and goes OFF once the vehicle has started. The light may also be used to retrieve service codes stored in the Electronic Control Assembly (ECA).

- If the light comes ON for a period then goes OFF, and a service code is present, the fault is intermittent. If such a fault occurs, the ECA will substitute a value or values and continue operating. In some cases, this action may result in a slight change in driveability. This process is Limited Operating Strategy (LOS).
