Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Rotor Field Coil Test

Fig. 4 Rotor Field Coil Test Connections:

1. Disconnect ground cable at battery and ``B'' terminal wire at alternator.
2. Connect suitable ohmmeter to ``L'' and ``F'' terminals of alternator as shown in Fig. 4. The ``F'' terminal is mounted internally and can be accessed through hole in rear of alternator. Ensure that ohmmeter lead does not contact alternator housing during test. Read and record reading.
3. If reading obtained in previous step is 3-6 ohms, a regulator problem is indicated.
4. If ohms are not as indicated, a problem exists in the rotor, slip rings or brushes.
