REMOVAL
1. Raise vehicle on hoist and position suitable safety stands under vehicle.
2. Remove the wheel (1007) and brake drum (1126). Disconnect the brake line from the rear wheel cylinder (2261). Connect a length of hose to the line and submerge the end of the hose in a can containing a small amount of brake fluid to prevent air from entering the system.
3. Remove the brake shoes and rear wheel cylinder.
4. Disconnect the parking brake lever from the parking brake rear cable and conduit (2A635).
5. Disconnect parking brake rear cable and conduit from brake backing plate (2211) by squeezing locking fingers together using a 9/16-inch flare nut wrench and pulling parking brake rear cable and conduit through brake backing plate.
6. Remove the axle shaft.
7. Remove the axle shaft from the housing being careful not to damage the oil seal.
8. Remove the nuts retaining the brake backing plate to the housing and remove the brake backing plate.
INSTALLATION
1. Apply Silicone Rubber D6AZ-19562-AA or equivalent to braking plate mounting hole to seal axle shaft flange mounting area.
2. Position the brake backing plate on the rear axle assembly (4006).
3. Install the backing plate retaining nuts. Alternately and evenly tighten the nuts to 34-47 Nm (25-35 ft lb).
Backing Plate Lubrication Points:
4. Apply a light coating of Disc Brake Caliper Slide Grease D7AZ-19590-A (ESA-M1C172-A) or equivalent to the ledge pads at the points where the brake shoes contact the brake backing plates.
5. Feed the parking brake rear cable and conduit through its hole in the brake backing plate and engage locking fingers.
6. Install the axle shaft.
7. Install the rear wheel cylinder and brake shoes and adjust using Brake Adjustment Tool D81L-1103-C or equivalent. Connect the parking brake rear cable and conduit to the lever.
8. Connect the brake line to the rear wheel cylinder and install the wheel and brake drum.
9. Remove air from the system by brake bleeding.
