Crankshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation

Crankshaft Position Sensor:

Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor 3.OL Flexible Fuel (FF) Engines
The crankshaft position sensor (CKP sensor) is a variable reluctance sensor triggered by a 36-minus-1 tooth trigger wheel located on the crankshaft pulley.
The sine wave type signal generated from the crankshaft position sensor provides two types of information:
^ One is the position of the crankshaft sprocket in 10 degree increments.
^ The other is the crankshaft speed (rpm). The ignition control module uses this information with the spark advance information from the powertrain control module to determine ignition coil turn ON and turn OFF time.
Initial engine ignition timing is referenced to the position of the crankshaft position sensor and is at 10° ±2 degrees BTDC and is NOT ADJUSTABLE.
