TRANSAXLE - AX4S - TORQUE CONVERTER HUB SPLINES AND THE TURBINE SHAFT SPLINES CHANGED FROM 23 TO 25 TEETH

ISSUE:
On 12/20/93 the torque converter hub splines and the turbine shaft splines were changed from 23 to 25 teeth. Since it is possible to mistakenly install a 25 tooth converter on a 23 tooth turbine shaft, care must be taken to prevent this from occurring. If this happens, the vehicle will have no forward or reverse movement.

ACTION:
If a replacement of either a torque converter or turbine shaft is required, be certain that the equal number of splines exist on the mating part. Refer to the following procedure for identifying the correct torque converter or turbine shaft.





1. Refer to the Transaxle Assembly And Torque Converter Stamp Code Chart to ensure correct parts usage. To identify this change, the converter stamped code and the transaxle assembly number have been changed.





2. Notice that the 25 tooth turbine hub has two small tab type projections spaced 180~ apart which can be seen when looking into the torque converter hub opening, Figure 1. The 23 tooth turbine hub does not have these tab type projections.

CAUTION:
IT IS POSSIBLE TO INSTALL A 25 TOOTH CONVERTER ON A 23 TOOTH TURBINE SHAFT. IF THIS OCCURS, THE VEHICLE WILL HAVE NO FORWARD OR REVERSE MOVEMENT.
