Heater Core: Service and Repair

NOTE: Vehicles may be equipped with either an aluminum or copper brass heater core. Replacement cores are always copper brass. Positively identify the type of core being replaced, as there is a difference in the core-to-case seals. Identification of core type can be made after a heater hose has been removed. An aluminum core will have a grey tube, and a copper brass core will have a copper-colored tube.

1. On models equipped with air bag, disarm air bag system.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain engine coolant system.
3. Disconnect heater hoses from heater core and plug all lines and fittings.
4. Remove floor duct from plenum and instrument panel.

5. Remove screws attaching heater core cover to plenum, then remove the cover and heater core.
6. Reverse procedure to install.
7. On models equipped with air bag, rearm air bag system.
8. Fill cooling system and check for leaks.
