Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Description and Operation

DESCRIPTION

ATX (FLC) Transaxle:

The transaxle combines a three speed automatic transaxle and a differential to form a single powertrain component. Both are housed in a compact, one-piece case. When installed in the vehicle, the engine/transaxle assembly is mounted transversely with the ATX on the lefthand side of the engine compartment.

CONSTRUCTION

Band Application Chart:

The transaxle uses a torque converter, a compound planetary gear set, one band, a single one-way clutch, and three friction clutches.

OPERATION
These components are applied as necessary to transmit engine torque through a compound planetary gear set. The gear set provides three forward gear ratios and one reverse. The planetary gear set transmits engine torque to the input gear which meshes with the idler gear. Meshing with the idler gear is the final drive (output) gear which is riveted to the differential case. When power flow reaches the differential, engine torque flows outward to the wheels through the differential gears.
