Rear

NOTE: The brake pad and lining should be replaced in full axle sets only. Do not replace worn rear brake pad and lining on one side of the vehicle only.


REMOVAL
1. Remove sufficient brake fluid from the brake master cylinder reservoir to allow for brake fluid displacement by the caliper pistons.
2. Raise and support the vehicle.
3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
4. Using an eight-inch C-clamp,
^ Position the clamp frame on the inboard side of the rear disc brake caliper housing.
^ Position the clamp screw on the outboard brake pad and lining backing plate.
^ Tighten the C-clamp sufficiently to press the rear disc brake caliper piston to the bottom of the caliper bore.

CAUTION: Do not press against the brake pad and lining spring clip.

5. Remove the caliper bolts.
6. Work the rear disc brake caliper off the rear disc brake rotor and rear wheel disc brake adapter.

CAUTION: Do not allow the rear disc brake caliper to hang by the rear brake hose. Provide a suitable support.

7. Remove the outboard brake pad and lining by pressing it in enough to release the locating lug at one end, swinging it up and releasing the other end.
8. Remove the inboard brake pad by tilting it enough to release the retainer spring from the caliper piston.
9. Repeat steps three through eight for the opposite wheel.

INSTALLATION
1. Inspect the rear disc brake caliper for wear, damage or leakage. Repair, replace or rebuild as necessary.
2. Position the inboard brake pad in the rear disc brake caliper and press the retainer spring fully into the caliper piston.
3. Start one end of the outboard brake pad on the rear disc brake caliper and rotate it down until the locating lugs and the retainer spring are fully seated.





4. Install the rear disc brake caliper on the rear disc brake rotor and rear wheel disc brake adapter. Make sure the notches on the upper ends of the brake pads are seated over the upper ledge of the rear wheel disc brake adapter and the brake pad lower tabs are positioned on the lower ledge of the rear wheel disc brake adapter.
5. Lubricate the caliper bolts with Disc Brake Caliper Slide Grease D7AZ-19590-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C172-A.
6. Install and tighten the caliper bolts to 15-20 Nm (11-14 ft lb).
7. Install the wheel and tire assembly. Tighten the lug nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft lb).
8. Lower the vehicle and start the engine to activate the power brake system.

CAUTION: Do not move the vehicle until the brakes have been tested.

9. Pump the brakes until full brake pedal feel is achieved and the brake warning light goes out.
10. Road test vehicle.
