Wiper and Washer Systems: Description and Operation
FRONTThe wiper system is driven by three Generic Electronic Module (GEM)-controlled relays. The wiper motor is controlled by two relays and the washer fluid pump is driven by a third relay. One wiper motor relay switches between high and low speeds, while the other wire motor relay switches between Run position and a dynamic brake (armature short circuit) and is associated with the interval mode. The GEM receives motor and washer fluid pump actuation input commands from the turn signal and windshield wiper switch in the stalk of the windshield wiper governor.
When the wipers are in the interval mode, the length of pause between wipes is decreased by rotating the knob away from the Off position. The pause is increased by rotating the knob toward the Off position.
REAR
The rear wiper system is not controlled by the GEM. It is operated by an instrument panel mounted control switch powered through an in-line circuit breaker.
