Engine: Service and Repair
REMOVAL1. Disconnect battery cables from battery terminals, then remove battery cable support to frame bracket bolts at left front of engine. Secure cables to engine.
2. Drain engine coolant.
3. Disconnect PCV closure hose at engine air cleaner outlet tube, then release air cleaner top clips.
4. Loosen air cleaner outlet duct clamp at throttle body, then remove air cleaner top and air cleaner outlet tube together.
5. Remove vacuum supply hoses from power brake booster, cruise control (at check valve near throttle linkage), Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor and heater and air conditioner supply hose (at A/C vacuum reservoir tank and bracket), then secure vacuum hoses to engine.
6. Remove upper radiator hose and lower radiator hose.
7. On models equipped with power steering, disconnect power steering pressure switch, then remove power steering pressure hose from clips in fan shroud.
8. Remove fan shroud to radiator screws, then pull fan out of lower clips. Rest fan shroud on radiator fan.
9. On models equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect automatic transmission cooler lines.
10. Remove radiator upper bolts, then lift radiator from core support.
11. Remove fan shroud from engine compartment.
12. Disconnect fuel charge wiring connectors at top center of dash panel.
13. Loosen clamps, then disconnect heater water hoses at water pump and intake manifold fittings.
14. Loosen pinch bolt, then disconnect steering column at intermediate shaft.
15. If equipped, recover A/C system, then disconnect A/C liquid line at condenser and suction line from accumulator. Cap all openings in A/C system to keep dirt, foreign material and excess moisture out of system.
16. Disconnect canister purge hose at Evaporative Emissions Canister (EVAP) canister purge solenoid under engine air cleaner base and secure to engine.
17. Release fuel system pressure.
18. Remove oil level dipstick, then raise and support vehicle.
19. Remove front wheel and tire assemblies.
20. On models equipped with automatic transmission, remove transmission.
21. On models equipped with manual transmission, remove transmission.
22. Remove manifold stud nuts, then the three-way catalytic converter to muffler bolts.
23. Disconnect and remove muffler and three-way catalytic converter.
24. Remove dash panel ground cables. One is located on cylinder head just behind power steering pump, other is located just above where exhaust manifold and three-way catalytic converter connect.
25. Remove front stabilizer bar to front suspension lower arm nuts, then disconnect stabilizer bar from lower arms. Discard nuts.
26. Remove disc brake calipers.
27. Disconnect fuel lines along left frame rail near engine mounts, then position jack under front suspension lower arm and raise arm until tension is applied to front coil spring.
28. Remove spindle to upper control arm ball joint nut and pinch bolt, then slowly lower jack under front suspension lower arm to disconnect spindle from ball joint.
29. Position powertrain removal lift tool No. 014-00265, or equivalent, under crossmember and engine, then lower vehicle until crossmember rests on removal lift.
30. Place wood blocks under front crossmember and rear of cylinder block to keep engine and crossmember assembly level, then install safety chains around crossmember.
31. Remove engine crossmember assembly to frame nuts from bolts on each side of vehicle, then lower engine out of vehicle.
NOTE: Ensure A/C compressor and wiring harnesses and hoses do not interfere with lowering.
32. When engine and crossmember assembly are clear, roll lift out from under vehicle.
33. Attach engine lifting eyes tool No. D81L-6001-D, or equivalent, to left rear cylinder head with bolt, noting the following:
a. Engine lifting eye should still be on right cylinder head. If not, install second lifting bracket.
b. When only two support points are used, engine assembly will hang slightly down at rear with transmission attached. With transmission removed, engine assembly will hang slightly down at front because of weight of accessories. To eliminate forward tilt, attach chain from left (front) support bar to stud on No. 4 exhaust runner. To eliminate rearward tilt, attach chain from right (rear) support bar to exhaust manifold between No. 2 and No. 3 exhaust runner.
c. Support hook or chain must angle rearward to rear attaching point.
NOTE: Damage will result if chain runs across throttle cable or throttle valve mechanism.
INSTALLATION
1. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Use care while moving transmission with torque converter installed.
NOTE: If transmission is tipped forward, converter can slide out of converter housing. Secure torque converter in transmission case until transmission is on transmission jack and is ready to be bolted to engine.
b. Fan clutch nut has lefthand thread. Turn counterclockwise to tighten.
c. Evacuate and refill A/C system with refrigerant.
d. When battery has been disconnected and connected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relearns its adaptive strategy. Vehicle may need to be driven ten miles or more to relearn strategy.
e. Fill cooling system to specified level, then check and adjust all fluid levels as necessary.
f. Start and run engine to check for proper operation and leaks. Service as required.
g. Check and align front suspension as necessary.
