Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove shifter boot screws, then slide boot from shift lever shaft.
3. Remove shift lever bolt, then the lever.
4. Raise and support vehicle, then install suitable jackstands.
5. Mark driveshaft for installation alignment.
6. Disconnect driveshaft at rear axle drive flange.
7. Pull driveshaft rearward and disconnect from transmission, then install suitable plug to extension housing to prevent fluid leakage.
8. Using clutch coupling tool No. T88T-70522-A, or equivalent, disconnect hydraulic line at clutch housing, then plug line ends to prevent fluid leakage.
9. Remove speedometer cable from extension housing or transfer case.
10. Disconnect starter motor and back-up lamp electrical connectors.
11. Remove exhaust system.
12. Position suitable jack below engine and position wood block to protect oil pan.
13. Remove starter motor, then position suitable transmission jack to support transmission.
14. Remove transmission to rear engine plate bolts, then the lock washers and flat washers.
15. Remove crossmember to frame side rail nuts, then the crossmember.
16. Disconnect clutch housing from locating pins, then slide transmission rearward until input shaft spline clears clutch disc.
17. Remove transmission assembly.
18. Reverse procedure to install.
