Air Injection: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
An electronically controlled system designed to divert air upstream to the exhaust manifold check valve, or downstream to the rear section check valve and catalytic converters. The system will also dump secondary air to the atmosphere during some operating modes.

OPERATION
The secondary Air Injection System (AIR) adds air to the already burning exhaust gases, oxidizing CO and HC's and creating additional heat which accelerates the catalytic converter operation.

CONSTRUCTION
Consists of a Mechanical Belt-driven Air Pump, Air bypass valve, Air Diverter Valve, Secondary Air Vent Solenoid, Vacuum Reservoir and Vacuum Check Valve(s).
