ISSUE
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may illuminate and set a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0125 on some vehicles. This may be due to the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor not reaching the required temperature level to enter closed loop operation conditions within a specified amount of time after starting the engine.
ACTION
Reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Retrieve, then clear DTCs from the PCM continuous memory.
2. If a DTC P0125 was present in continuous memory, perform normal diagnostics in accordance with the 1996 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Service Manual for DTC P0125.
3. If no problem was found after performing Step 2, and no other DTCs were present, reprogram the PCM using the Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS) or New Generation Star (NGS) Tester.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal (FPS 8262- obtainable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
