TRANSAXLE - AX4S - NEW DESIGN ELASTOMERIC GASKETS FOR MAIN CONTROL COVER AND BOTTOM PAN

FORD:
1996 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1996 SABLE

LIGHT TRUCK:
1996 WINDSTAR

ISSUE:
The AX4S transaxles contain elastomeric gaskets for the main control cover and the bottom pan. These new gaskets replace the cork-style gaskets. The elastomeric gasket has improved durability and sealing capability and is reusable.

ACTION:
If a main control cover and/or bottom pan on an AX4S transaxle containing an elastomeric gasket is removed, clean, inspect and reuse the elastomeric gasket if not damaged. Torque the main control cover and bottom pan retaining bolts to 10-12 N-m (7-9 lb-ft).

NOTE:
A UNIQUE TRANSAXLE CASE AND CHAIN COVER ARE REQUIRED DUE TO A MAIN CONTROL COVER AND BOTTOM PAN RETAINING BOLT SIZE CHANGE FROM 8 mm TO 6 mm. IN ADDITION, THE BOTTOM PAN DEPTH HAS BEEN INCREASED AND REQUIRES A UNIQUE FILTER AND SEAL ASSEMBLY.
