Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Piston Ring: Service and Repair

PISTON RINGS-FITTING
1. Select proper ring set for the size cylinder bore.

NOTE: Always use a piston ring expanding tool to install rings on a piston.

2. Position piston ring in cylinder bore in which it is going to be used.
3. Push piston ring down into bore area where normal piston ring wear is not encountered.

CAUTION: Use care when installing piston ring to avoid possible damage to piston ring or cylinder bore.

4. Position piston ring in bore so piston ring is square with cylinder wall and check piston ring end gap.

PISTON RING END GAP
1. Measure gap between ends of piston ring with Feeler Gauge D81L-4201-A or equivalent.

2. If ring gap is lesser or greater than specified limits, try another piston ring set.
3. Piston rings should be staggered on the piston to make sure the piston ring end gaps are not aligned.
