Balance Shaft: Testing and Inspection

1. Force the balance shaft to the rear of the cylinder block.
2. Install Dial Indicator with Bracketry TOOL-4201-C or equivalent so that the contact point rests against the front of the balance shaft and the indicator parallel to the balance shaft axis.
3. Zero the dial indicator. Pry the balance shaft forward and note the reading on the dial.
4. If end play exceeds specification, remove the balance shaft gear and replace the balance shaft thrust plate. If end play is less than specification, check the balance shaft thrust plate and balance shaft for scratches, burrs, nicks or dirt.
5. Recheck the end play.
