Shift Interlock Solenoid: Service and Repair
REMOVALWARNING: THE ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT NECESSARY FOR AIR BAG SYSTEM DEPLOYMENT IS POWERED DIRECTLY FROM THE BATTERY AND A BACKUP POWER SUPPLY. TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY, THE BATTERY POSITIVE CABLE MUST BE DISCONNECTED FOR A MINIMUM OF ONE MINUTE TO DE-ENERGIZE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY PRIOR TO REMOVING ANY OF THE AIR BAG SYSTEM COMPONENTS.
1. Disconnect the positive battery cable and wait for one minute before beginning disassembly.
2. Remove two screws and instrument panel steering column cover.
3. Remove three screws and instrument panel steering column cover reinforcement.
4. Remove two screws and steering column opening brace.
5. Disconnect electrical connectors between main wiring and steering column. Disconnect shift lock actuator.
6. Disconnect transaxle control selector indicator loop from transmission column shift selector tube. Remove screw and transmission range indicator from steering column.
7. Remove four nuts retaining steering column absorber to steering column and instrument panel reinforcement.
8. Remove four nuts retaining steering column to instrument panel reinforcement.
9. Lower steering column to seat.
10. Remove retaining screws and shift lock actuator.
INSTALLATION
1. Install shift lock actuator and retaining screws.
2. Raise steering column into position onto instrument panel reinforcement studs.
3. Install four nuts securing steering column to instrument panel reinforcement. Tighten to 13-17 Nm (115-150 inch lbs.).
4. Install steering column absorber and four nuts. Tighten nuts to 23-32 Nm (18-23 ft. lbs.).
5. install transmission range indicator. Connect cable loop to transmission column shift selector tube. Adjust transmission range indicator as outlined.
6. Connect main wiring to steering column electrical connectors. Connect shift lock actuator.
7. Install instrument panel steering column opening brace.
8. Install instrument panel steering column cover reinforcement and tighten screws to 10-14 Nm (88-123 inch lbs.).
9. Install instrument panel steering column cover and tighten screws to 10-14 Nm (88-123 inch lbs.).
10. Connect positive battery cable.
