Washer Fluid Level Indicator: Description and Operation

Vehicles equipped with a windshield washer low-fluid warning indicator system:
- Have a red WASH FLUID indicator.
- Illuminate the warning indicator when the windshield washer fluid level is low and the multi-function switch is activated.
- Are equipped with a windshield washer reservoir fluid level sensor mounted in the windshield washer reservoir which consists of:
+ a float and magnet assembly that opens and closes a reed-type switch.
+ switch contacts that close when the windshield washer fluid level in the windshield washer reservoir is less than one-quarter full.

- Filters out false signals (due to sloshing fluid) by requiring the low fluid signal to be at least five seconds in duration before being accepted as valid by the generic electronic module (GEM).

The GEM will indicate a low washer fluid condition when the following conditions are met:
- When the ignition switch is turned from START to RUN
- Or, when the washer pump switch is in RUN or ACC. If a valid low washer fluid condition is present when the ignition switch is moved from START to RUN:
- The LOW WASHER FLUID lamp will illuminate.
- The generic electronic module will generate one short tone.
- The LOW WASHER FLUID lamp will continue to illuminate for 60 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to RUN.
- The LOW WASHER FLUID lamp will turn off before 60 seconds has expired if:
+ The ignition switch is no longer in ACC or RUN position.
+ Or, the low washer fluid condition no longer exists.

When a valid low washer fluid condition is present while the ignition switch is in RUN or ACC, and the windshield washer pump is activated:
- The generic electronic module will sound once.
- The low washer fluid lamp will illuminate as long as the washer switch remains activated, for no less than 60 seconds.
- A new, 60 second warning period is initiated every time the washer switch is pressed during a low-fluid condition.
