Catalytic Converter: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
The three way catalytic converters, mounted in the engine exhaust stream, provide catalytic function to speed up the heat producing chemical reaction between components of the exhaust gases in order to reduce the air pollutants.

OPERATION
The three way catalytic converters work as gas reactors. Catalyst material is housed inside the three way catalytic converter, which is made of a ceramic substrate that is coated with a high surface area alumina and impregnated with catalytically active platinum. Access is provided to the surface of the catalyst material that plays a major role in the heat producing chemical reaction.
