Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Timing Chain: Testing and Inspection

1. Remove engine front cover.
2. Rotate the crankshaft so the camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket timing marks line up.
3. Mark the top link(s) of the timing chain.
4. Have an assistant hold the crankshaft sprocket with a suitable tool so it cannot turn.
5. Place a machinist's scale above the timing chain (camshaft sprocket) so you can measure its movement.
6. Put a torque wrench and socket on the camshaft sprocket bolt.
7. Apply a maximum of 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) torque in a clockwise direction.
8. Note location of marked link on scale.
9. Apply a maximum of 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) torque in a counterclockwise direction while measuring the amount the marked link moves.
10. Movement should be less than 3.175 mm (0.12 inch). If movement is excessive, replace timing chain.
