Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Radiator: Service Precautions

CAUTION:
Cleaning
Do not use caustic cleaning solutions or copper/brass radiator cleaning agents on aluminum radiators. Internal cleaning of the aluminum tubes can be accomplished with sonic cleaning equipment or by removing one end tank to gain access to the tubes. Then, clean the tubes with a mild household liquid detergent. Rinse the core with clean water when completed. Do not use a metal brush to clean an aluminum core. Use only horsehair, bristle or nylon brushes.

NOTE:
Core Repairs
With the introduction of a new radiator braze process, there is no longer an approved service method for repairing radiator core leaks. Due to the type of flux used during brazing, the two component epoxy material previously used will not adhere to the aluminum radiator core. If the radiator core leaks, the radiator should be replaced.
