1. Disconnect the power steering fluid cooler from the power steering pump reservoir and place in a suitable container. Plug the reservoir return tube.
2. Fill the power steering pump reservoir with power steering fluid.
- Use Motorcraft Mercon Multi-Purpose ATF XT-2-QDX or MERCON equivalent.
3. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connector.
4. Raise and support the vehicle so the wheels are off the ground.
5. Turn the steering wheel from stop-to-stop while cranking the engine until the fluid exiting the power steering return hose is clear of all contamination and debris.
- Add Motorcraft Mercon Multi-Purpose ATF XT-2-QDX or MERCON equivalent as needed.
CAUTION:
- Do not crank the engine for more than 15 seconds at a time. Allow the starter to cool for 1 minute before cranking again. Premature starter failure can occur.
- Do not hold the steering wheel against the stops for more than three to five seconds at a time. Damage to the power steering pump will occur.
6. Reconnect the ignition coil electrical connector.
7. Remove the plug from the reservoir return tube and attach the power steering fluid cooler to the power steering pump reservoir.
8. Check the fluid level. Add fluid to the proper level.
9. Lower the vehicle.
10. Start the engine and cycle the steering wheel from stop-to-stop to expel any trapped air from the system.
CAUTION: Do not hold the steering wheel against the stops for more than three to five seconds at a time. Damage to the power steering pump will occur.
11. Bleed the power steering system.
