Purging
AIR PURGE WITH VACUUM EXTERNAL SOURCE PROCEDURE1. Remove the power steering pump reservoir cap.
2. Tightly insert the rubber stopper of the air evacuator assembly into the power steering pump reservoir. Connect the tubing, vacuum hose and tester to the stopper.
3. Start the vehicle.
4. Use Vacuum Tester or equivalent to apply 68-85 kPa (20-25 in-Hg) for a minimum of three minutes at idle.
5. Release the vacuum and remove the vacuum tester.
6. Check the power steering fluid level. Add power steering fluid if the level is below the full (F) mark.
- Use Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose ATF XT-2-QDX or MERCON equivalent.
7. Reinstall the vacuum tester and apply 68-85 kPa (20-25 in-Hg) vacuum.
8. Cycle the steering wheel fully to the left and right every 30 seconds for approximately five minutes.
CAUTION: Do not hold the steering wheel against the stops for more than three to five seconds at a time. Damage to the power steering pump could occur.
9. Stop the engine.
10. Release the vacuum, and remove the vacuum tester and accessories.
11. Check the power steering fluid level. Add power steering fluid if necessary. Install the reservoir cap.
- Use Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose ATF XT-2-QDX or MERCON equivalent.
12. Start the engine.
13. Cycle the steering wheel fully to the left and right every 30 seconds for approximately five minutes.
CAUTION: Do not hold the steering wheel against the stops for more than three to five seconds at a time. Damage to the power steering pump could occur.
14. Repeat the system bleeding procedures if necessary.
