Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Exhaust System, Neutralizing

To neutralize exhaust system noise, the following steps must be taken:
1. Loosen dual converter Y pipe at exhaust manifolds and the fasteners at the flanges of the muffler inlet pipe.
2. Place a stand supporting muffler. Raise muffler to a height so that the system is parallel to the frame and the muffler pipe bracket is unloaded.
3. Tighten flat flanges.
4. Position dual converter Y pipes to exhaust manifolds and tighten. Make sure that catalyst heat shields do not contact frame rails.
5. Prior to tightening muffler inlet pipe, make sure that tail pipe over rear axle housing is spaced evenly between rear suspension arm and bushing and rear spring. Tighten flanges at muffler inlet.
6. With complete exhaust system tight (and in cold condition) the rear hanger strap should be angling forward, to allow the system to expand rearward, when heated to normal running temperature.
