System Flushing

Always flush the power steering system when replacing the power steering pump due to fluid contamination.
1. Remove the power steering pump and power steering pump pulley.
2. Install the power steering pump pulley on the power steering pump. Install the power steering pump. Flush the power steering pressure hose before installing. Connect only the power steering pressure hose.
3. Place the power steering return hose from the steering gear in a container and plug the reservoir return line.
4. Fill the power steering oil reservoir with MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid or equivalent.
5. Disconnect ignition coil wire and raise the front wheels off the ground. Make sure vehicle is not in gear.
6. While adding approximately 1.9 liters (0.5 gallon) of fluid, turn the ignition switch to the START position (using the ignition key) and crank the engine with the starter while turning the steering wheel from left to right.
7. When all the fluid has been added, turn ignition switch to the OFF position and connect the ignition coil wire.
8. Remove the plug from the reservoir return line and connect the line to the power steering oil reservoir.
9. Check the fluid level. Add MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid or equivalent if necessary.

CAUTION: Do not overfill the power steering oil reservoir.

10. Lower the vehicle.
11. Turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock without hitting the stops to expel any trapped air.
