Starter Drive/Bendix: Testing and Inspection

1. Examine gears, spline on output shaft, and drive pinion for chipped, broken or worn conditions. Replace if required.

CAUTION: The starter drive is packed with grease and sealed. Do not wash the starter drive because the solvent will wash out the lubricant causing starter drive to slip. Use a brush or compressed air to clean the starter drive, starter motor armature, brush holder, gear assemblies, drive end housing, pole pieces and planet gears. Wash all other parts In solvent and dry.

2. Inspect the entire circumference of the ring gear for damage when the starter drive gear teeth are damaged. The flywheel ring gear pattern will usually be found in two places around the ring gear. If the starter drive gear or ring gear show signs of excessive wear or milling, they must be replaced.

Starter Drive Inspection
1. Disassemble starter drive from the starter motor.
- Turn the starter drive pinion by hand and hold the overrunning clutch.
Replace the starter drive if the pinion turns in both directions or does not turn.
