Attachment III - Technical Information
OVERVIEWThe connectors for the catalyst monitor sensors (CMS) may be reversed. The harness will be inspected to determine if the connectors are routed to the proper CMS. If required, some disassembly of the harness will be necessary to switch the position of the connectors. Self-tests will be performed to verify the repair and to clear any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to this repair. The only DTCs related to this program are P1129 (engine running) and P0136/P0156 (continuous DTCs). If any other DTCs are found, they are not related to this program and should be diagnosed and repaired under the applicable warranty.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
2. Open the harness cover located in front of the transmission fluid pan. See Figure 1.
3. Locate the black with orange striped (BK/OG) wire in the harness and determine if it is correctly routed and connected to the right-hand CMS (toward transmission cooler lines). See Figure 1.
^ If the BK/OG wire is connected to the right-hand CMS, close the harness cover and lower the vehicle. Proceed to step 10.
^ If the BK/OG wire is connected to the left-hand CMS, continue to the next step.
4. Disconnect the right- and left-hand CMS connectors. See Figure 1.
5. Depress the release tab and slide the harness cover off the mounting bracket. See Figure 1.
6. Switch the position of the harness connectors in the harness cover as follows.
^ Release the tabs on the back of the harness cover and remove the CMS female connectors. See Figure 2.
^ Reverse the position of the CMS female connectors and reinstall them into the harness cover.
7. Install the harness cover onto the bracket.
8. Connect the right- and left-hand CMS connectors. Verify that the BK/OG wire is now connected to the right-hand CMS.
9. Close the harness cover and lower the vehicle.
10. NOTE: The only DTCs related to this program are P1129 (engine running) and P0136/P0156 (continuous DTCs). If any other DTCs are found, they are not related to this program and should be diagnosed and repaired under the applicable warranty.
Using the New Generation STAR (NGS) Tester or Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS), perform the following self-tests:
A. Key On Engine Running (KOER).
^ If code P1129 is present, the repair has not been carried out correctly. The CMS connectors must be rechecked and connected correctly following the instructions in this document. Repeat the KOER self-test.
^ If code P1129 is not present, continue to step B.
B. Retrieve/Clear Continuous DTCs.
^ If present, clear codes P0136 and/or P0156.
11. Proceed to the Prepare Authorized Modifications Label section of this procedure.
PREPARE AUTHORIZED MODIFICATIONS LABEL
1. Obtain and prepare the Authorized Modifications label. Write the modification completed, your P&A code, date of repair and the recall program number in the spaces provided on the label. See Figure 3.
2. Open the hood and clean an area on the radiator support with isopropyl alcohol and a clean cloth.
3. Apply the label to the clean area.
4. Provide Massachusetts and California owners with a completed Vehicle Emissions Recall - Proof of Correction certificate. See Figure 4.
