Cylinder Head Assembly

NOTE: New cylinder head bolts must be installed. They are torque-to-yield designed and cannot be reused.





Position the LH cylinder head and gasket and install the bolts. Tighten the bolts in six stages, in the sequence shown:

Stage 1: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
Stage 2: Tighten bolts 90 degrees.
Stage 3: Loosen one full turn.
Stage 4: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
Stage 5: Tighten 90 degrees.
Stage 6: Tighten 90 degrees.

Cylinder Head Flatness

NOTE: The straightedge used must be flat within 0.0051 mm (0.0002 inch) per foot of tool length.

Support the cylinder head on a bench with the head gasket side up. Inspect all areas of the deck face with a straightedge and feeler gauge. The cylinder head must not have depressions deeper than 0.0254 mm (0.001 inch) across a 38.1 mm (1.5 inch) square area, or scratches more than 0.0254 mm (0.001 inch) deep.





Camshaft Cap bolts 10 Nm (89 in.lbs.)





Exhaust manifold bolts 20 Nm (15 ft.lbs.)





Upper intake manifold bolts 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.)





Lower intake manifold bolts 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.)
