Compressor Shaft Seal: Service and Repair

AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) COMPRESSOR SHAFT SEAL


Special Tool(s):






SPECIAL TOOL(S)

REMOVAL
1. Remove the disk and hub assembly from the A/C compressor.







2. Using the special tool, remove the shaft seal felt from the nose of the A/C compressor.

3. CAUTION: To prevent refrigerant system contamination, do not allow dirt or other foreign materials to enter the A/C compressor.

Clean the compressor nose area.







4. Using the special tool, remove the shaft seal snap ring.







5. Using the special tool, remove the shaft seal from the A/C compressor.

INSTALLATION

1. CAUTION: To prevent refrigerant system contamination, do not allow dirt or other foreign materials to enter the A/C compressor.

Clean the A/C compressor nose area.







2. Lubricate the shaft seal and special tool with PAG Compressor Oil YN-12-C or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSH-M1C231-B. Place the shaft seal on the special tool.







3. Position the special tool, with the shaft seal, over the A/C compressor shaft.







4. Using the special tool, push the shaft seal onto the A/C compressor shaft until seated.







5. Using the special tool, install the shaft seal snap ring.
6. Carry out the A/C compressor external leak test.







7. Using the special tool, install the shaft seal felt.
8. Install the disk and hub assembly.
