Removal

Engine

Special Tool(s):





All vehicles
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Maintenance/Service and Repair.
2. Relieve the fuel pressure. For additional information, refer to Fuel Delivery and Air Induction.
3. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Battery.
4. Recover the A/C system. For additional information, refer to Heating and Air Conditioning.
5. Drain the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to Cooling System.
6. Drain the engine oil.
7. Remove the hood.
8. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. For additional information, refer to Fuel Delivery and Air Induction.





9. Remove the upper radiator hose.





10. Remove the lower radiator hose.
11. Remove the fan and shroud. For additional information, refer to Cooling System.





12. Disconnect the powertrain control module (PCM) electrical connector. Remove the retaining nut on the harness clamp. Position the harness on the engine.





13. Remove the stud bolts and the ground cable.





14. Remove the heater hose assembly.
1. Disconnect the heater hoses at the bulkhead.
2. Disconnect the vacuum hose.
3. Disconnect the heater hoses at the engine and remove the assembly.





15. Disconnect the vacuum reservoir tube connection.





16. Disconnect the engine-to-degas bottle coolant bypass hose.





17. Disconnect the degas bottle-to-engine coolant supply hose.





18. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.





19. Disconnect the mass air flow sensor (MAF) electrical connector.





20. Disconnect the A/C compressor manifold. Plug the lines and the compressor ports.





21. Disconnect the accelerator cable and, if equipped, the speed control cable from the throttle body (TB) and the cable mounting bracket and position aside.





22. Disconnect and position aside the power steering pressure (PSP) switch electrical connector and the high-pressure power steering tube.
23. Disconnect the fuel supply tube spring lock coupling. For additional information, refer to Fuel Delivery and Air Induction.





24. Disconnect the 42-pin electrical connector and the evaporative purge tube quick connect coupling. For additional information, refer to Fuel Delivery and Air Induction.





25. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose and the engine ground strap.





26. Disconnect the positive battery cable, the negative battery cable and the solenoid control wire at the starter.





27. Remove the starter wiring harness support bracket bolt and position the wiring harness aside.





28. Position the RH splash shield aside.





29. Disconnect the generator electrical connections.





30. Detach generator wiring pin-type retainer.





31. If equipped, disconnect the block heater electrical connector.





32. Disconnect the front heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector at the transmission bell housing.

Vehicles with automatic transmission





33. Remove the bolt and the transmission cooling tubes retaining bracket.

All vehicles





34. Remove the bolt and the transmission dust shield.





35. Remove the 2 exhaust manifold-to-front pipe nuts.





36. Disconnect the HO2S electrical connector at the rear of the transmission.





37. Disconnect the engine wiring harness pin-type retainer.





38. Disconnect the engine wiring harness anchor and the pin-type retainer and position the wiring harness aside.





39. Disconnect the engine oil pressure (EOP) sensor electrical connector.





40. Remove and discard the engine oil filter.

Vehicles with automatic transmission





41. Disconnect the transmission wiring harness.
^ Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor, transmission range sensor, back-up light switch and the transmission electrical connectors.
^ Disconnect the pin-type retainers and position the harness forward to the engine.

Vehicles with manual transmission





42. Disconnect the electrical connector on the crossmember and the speed sensor electrical connector.





43. Disconnect the reverse lamp electrical connector and the 2 wiring pin-type retainers.

All vehicles





44. Remove the 4 bolts and the oil filter adapter.





45. Remove the bolt, the 2 stud bolts and the starter.





46. Remove the starter dust shield.

Vehicles with automatic transmission





47. NOTE: Mark one stud and the flexplate for assembly reference.

Remove the 4 torque converter nuts.

All vehicles





48. NOTE: Leave the 2 side bolts in until the engine is ready to be removed.

Remove 9 of the transmission-to-engine bolts.

Vehicles with automatic transmission





49. Remove the transmission fluid indicator and tube assembly.

All vehicles





50. Install engine lifting bracket.
51. Support the transmission with a floor jack.





52. Support the engine with the Floor Crane, using the Spreader Bar.
53. Remove the 2 side transmission-to-engine bolts.





54. NOTE: Left side shown, right side similar.

Remove the 4 engine support insulator nuts.
55. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
