Pinpoint Test W: The Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

Normal Operation

The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the powertrain malfunction data from the PCM for the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) status and the transaxle status and from the 4X4 control module for the All-Wheel Drive (AWD) (if equipped) status over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. When a fault condition exists in the ETC system or in the transaxle, the PCM provides the IC with a message to turn the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on. When a AWD fault condition exists, the 4X4 control module sends the IC a message to turn the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on.

If the ETC or transmission message is missing for greater than 5 seconds, the IC sets DTC U0100 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on.

If the AWD status message is missing for greater than 5 seconds, the IC sets DTC U0102 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on.

NOTE: If U0100 is set in the IC, other symptoms may also be present such as an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or temperature gauge.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- ETC concern
- AWD concern
- Transmission concern
- PCM
- IC

PINPOINT TEST W: THE POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON

-------------------------------------------------
W1 CARRY OUT THE IC INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL

- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC DataLogger.
- Select the IC powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator (WR_LMP) active command. Command the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on and off while observing the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator.
- Does the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator illuminate when commanded on, and turn off when commanded off?

Yes
GO to W2.

No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
W2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded IC DTCs from the self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
For DTC U0100, Go To Pinpoint Test AM. Pinpoint Tests AM: DTC U0100

For DTC U0102, Go To Pinpoint Test AN. Pinpoint Tests AN: DTC U0102

For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes

No
GO to W3.

-------------------------------------------------
W3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded PCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
DIAGNOSE all PCM DTCs first. REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information.

No
If equipped with 4x4, GO to W4.

If not equipped with 4x4, INSTALL a new PCM. TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
W4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE 4X4 CONTROL MODULE SELF-TESTS

- Check for recorded 4X4 control module DTCs from the self-tests.
- Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
DIAGNOSE all 4X4 control module DTCs first.

No
INSTALL a new 4X4 control module. TEST the system for normal operation.
