Pinpoint Test AE: The AWD, 4X4 LOW, 4X4 HIGH Or 4X2 Message Center Indicator Is Never/Always On (If Equipped)

Normal Operation

The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) status from the transfer case control module over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. If the vehicle is shifted into All-Wheel Drive (AWD), 4WD low or high, the transfer case control module sends the IC a message to turn on the AWD, 4X4 low or 4X4 high message center indicator. If the vehicle is shifted out of either AWD, 4X4 low or 4X4 high into 4X2 mode, the 4WD sends the IC a message to turn on the 4X2 message center indicator, informing the driver that the vehicle has shifted into 4X2.

If the 4X4 status message is missing for less than 5 seconds, the IC defaults the applicable 4X4 message center indicator to the last on/off state, based upon the last known good ABS status message received.

If the 4X4 status message is missing for greater than 5 seconds, the IC sets DTC U0102 and defaults the applicable 4X4 message center indicator off.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- 4WD concern
- Transfer case control module
- Message center concern



PINPOINT TEST AE: THE AWD, 4X4 LOW, 4X4 HIGH OR 4X2 MESSAGE CENTER INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON (IF EQUIPPED)

AE1 CHECK 4WD SYSTEM OPERATION


- Test drive the vehicle and operate the 4WD system.
- Does the 4WD system operate correctly?

Yes
GO to AE2.

No
REFER to Transfer Case.

AE2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE TRANSFER CASE MODULE SELF-TEST


- Check for recorded DTCs from the transfer case module self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
REFER to Transfer Case.

No
GO to AE3.

AE3 CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR FUNCTION


- Close all doors and hood.
- Ignition ON.
- Open the driver door while monitoring the door ajar message center warning indicator.
- Does the driver door ajar message center warning indicator turn off with the driver door closed and turn on with the driver door open?

Yes
GO to AE4.

No
GO to Pinpoint Test AF. Pinpoint Tests AF: The Message Center Is Not Operating Correctly

AE4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IC SELF-TEST


- Check for recorded IC DTCs from the self-test.
- Is DTC U0102 recorded?

Yes
GO to Pinpoint Test AR. Pinpoint Tests AR: DTC U0102

No
INSTALL a new 4X4 control module. REFER to Transfer Case. TEST the system for normal operation.
