Steering Shaft: Service and Repair




Steering Column Shaft

NOTICE: Do not allow the steering column to rotate while the steering column shaft is disconnected, or damage to the clockspring may result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, remove and recenter the clockspring. For additional information, refer to Restraints and Safety Systems &/or Air Bag Systems.









Removal and Installation

1. NOTE: Use a steering wheel holding device, such as Hunter(R) 28-75-1 or equivalent.
Using a suitable holding device, hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.






2. Remove the 2 screws, detach the in-vehicle temperature sensor and hose assembly (if equipped) and the remove the steering column opening trim panel.
- To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).


3. Remove the steering column shaft joint cover.

4. Remove the steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt and detach the steering column shaft from the steering column.
- To install, tighten to 26 Nm (19 lb-ft).


5. Remove the steering column shaft-to-steering gear extension shaft bolt and remove the steering column shaft.
- To install, tighten to 26 Nm (19 lb-ft).


6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
