Pinpoint Test AI: The Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Message Center Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On
Normal Operation
The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives requests from the PCM, Transmission Control Module (TCM) and Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) to control the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center indicator. The PCM provides an indicator request for Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) faults and the transmission faults (gasoline engines) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. On the diesel engine, the Transmission Control Module (TCM) provides an indicator request for transmission faults over the HS-CAN communication bus. The TCCM provides an indicator request for Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) faults over the HS-CAN communication bus.
If the indicator request message for ETC or transmission (gasoline engines) faults is missing or if the data is deemed invalid for less than 5 seconds, the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center indicator remains in the last indication state (on or off) based upon the last known good message received. If the indicator request message for ETC or transmission (gasoline engines) faults is missing or if the data is deemed invalid by the IPC for greater than 5 seconds, the IPC sets DTC U0100:00 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator active (on).
If the indicator request message for the transmission faults (diesel engine) is missing or deemed invalid for less than 5 seconds, the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center indicator remains in the last indication state (on or off) based upon the last known good message received. If the transmission indicator request message is missing or if the data is deemed invalid by the IPC for greater than 5 seconds, the IPC sets DTC U0101:00 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator active (on).
If the indicator request message for the 4WD faults is missing or deemed invalid for less than 5 seconds, the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center indicator remains in the last indication state (on or off) based upon the last known good message received. If the indicator request message is missing or if the data is deemed invalid by the IPC for greater than 5 seconds, the IPC sets DTC U0102:00 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) message center warning indicator active (on).
NOTE: If DTC U0100:00 sets in the IPC, other symptoms may also be present such as an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or temperature gauge. If DTC U0101:00 sets in the IPC, other symptoms may also be present such as an inoperative transmission temperature gauge. If DTC U0102:00 sets in the IPC, other symptoms may also be present such as an inoperative 4X4 high or 4X4 low indicator when equipped with Electronic Shift-On-The-Fly (ESOF).
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Message center concern
- ETC concern
- 4WD concern
- Transmission concern
PINPOINT TEST AI: THE POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
-------------------------------------------------
AI1 VERIFY THE OPERATION OF THE DOOR AJAR MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR
- Close all doors then open the LH front door.
- Ignition ON.
- NOTE: If multiple warnings are present, the message center cycles through each of the warning indicators. Allow the displays to cycle through each display while determining whether the door ajar message center warning indicator is active.
- Observe the message center.
- Is the door ajar message center warning indicator active?
Yes
GO to AI2.
No
GO to Pinpoint Test AN. Pinpoint Tests AN: The Door Ajar Message Center Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On
-------------------------------------------------
AI2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded IPC DTCs from the self-test.
- Is DTC U0100:00, DTC U0101:00 or DTC U0102:00 recorded?
Yes
For DTC U0100:00, GO to Pinpoint Test BA. For DTC U0101:00, GO to Pinpoint Test BB. For DTC U0102:00, GO to Pinpoint Test BC. Pinpoint Tests BA: DTC U0100:00 Pinpoint Tests BB: DTC U0101:00 Pinpoint Tests BC: DTC U0102:00
No
For gasoline engine, GO to AI2. For diesel engine, GO to AI3.
-------------------------------------------------
AI3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded PCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Computers and Control Systems.
No
GO to AI4.
-------------------------------------------------
AI4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE TCM SELF-TEST
- Check for recorded TCM DTCs from the self-test.
- Are any DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to Automatic Transaxle/Transmission - TorqShift(R) Testing and Inspection to diagnose TCM DTCs.
No
REFER to Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Systems to diagnose TCCM DTCs.
