Pinpoint Test E: The Cruise Control Switch Illumination Is Inoperative
Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 71, Cluster and Panel Illumination for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number
Normal Operation
The instrument panel dimmer switch provides variable voltage to cruise control switches through the clockspring.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Cruise control switch(es)
- Steering wheel harness
- Clockspring
PINPOINT TEST E: THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH ILLUMINATION IS INOPERATIVE
NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
NOTE: Failure to disconnect the battery when instructed will result in false resistance readings. Refer to Battery, Mounting and Cables Battery Disconnect.
-------------------------------------------------
E1 CHECK THE CLOCKSPRING GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Depower the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). Refer to Supplemental Restraint System Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering. REMOVE the driver air bag module. Refer to Supplemental Restraint System Driver Air Bag Module.
- Disconnect: Clockspring C218a.
- Measure the resistance between the clockspring C218a-5, circuit GD174 (BK/WH), harness side and ground.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to E2.
No
REPAIR circuit GD174 (BK/WH) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to Supplemental Restraint System Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering.
-------------------------------------------------
E2 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE CLOCKSPRING
- Connect: Negative Battery Cable.
- Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.
- Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch to the full illumination position.
- Measure the voltage between the clockspring C218a-4, circuit VLN18 (BU/WH), harness side and ground.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes
GO to E3.
No
REPAIR circuit VLN18 (BU/WH) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to Supplemental Restraint System Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering.
-------------------------------------------------
E3 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCHES
- Turn the parking lamps off.
- Remove the driver air bag module. Refer to Supplemental Restraint System Driver Air Bag Module.
- Connect: Clockspring C218a.
- Disconnect: Upper Clockspring C218c.
- Connect: Negative Battery Cable.
- Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.
- Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch to the full illumination position.
- Measure the voltage between the upper clockspring C218c, pin 2, component side and ground.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
Yes
GO to E4.
No
INSTALL a new clockspring. REFER to Supplemental Restraint System Service and Repair. TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
E4 CHECK THE CLOCKSPRING GROUND CIRCUIT
- Disconnect: Negative Battery Cable.
- Measure the resistance between the upper clockspring C218c, pin 1, component side and ground.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms ?
Yes
GO to E5.
No
INSTALL a new clockspring. REFER to Supplemental Restraint System Service and Repair. TEST the system for normal operation.
-------------------------------------------------
E5 CHECK THE STEERING WHEEL HARNESS
- Inspect the steering wheel harness for shorts, opens or damage.
- Is the steering wheel harness OK?
Yes
INSTALL a new steering wheel switch(es). TEST the system for normal operation. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to Supplemental Restraint System Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering.
No
INSTALL a new steering wheel harness. TEST the system for normal operation. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to Supplemental Restraint System Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering.
