Pinpoint Test F: DTC B1317

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Pinpoint Test F: DTC B1317

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 118, Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) for schematic and connector information Electrical Diagrams.

Normal Operation

The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) monitors the voltage from the battery to determine if it exceeds specific thresholds. DTC B1317 sets in continuous memory if the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) detects battery voltage above 16 volts.

- DTC B1317 (Battery Voltage High)- sets if the voltage supplied to the Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) /Vehicle Security Module (VSM) exceeds 16 volts during the TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) /VSM (Vehicle Security Module) self-test or normal operation, with vehicle speed greater than 5 km/h (3 mph).

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Wiring, terminals or connectors

- Charging system concern

- TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) /VSM (Vehicle Security Module)

PINPOINT TEST F : DTC B1317

NOTE: DTC B1317 can be set if the vehicle has been recently jump started or the battery has been recently charged. The battery may become discharged due to excessive load(s) on the charging system from aftermarket accessories or if the battery has been left unattended with the accessories on.

NOTE: Carry out a thorough inspection and verification before proceeding with the pinpoint test. Refer to Inspection and Verification Inspection and Verification.

F1 RETRIEVE ALL CMDTCs (Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes) IN ALL MODULES

- Connect the scan tool.

- Ignition ON.

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: VSM (Vehicle Security Module) Self-Test.

Is DTC B1317 present?

Yes
REFER to Charging System to diagnose the charging system. CLEAR all Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes (CMDTCs).
TEST the system for normal operation.

No
GO to F2.

F2 CHECK BATTERY CONDITION

- Ignition OFF.

- Refer to Charging System and carry out the battery condition test Pinpoint Tests.

Does the battery pass the condition test?

Yes
If the battery passed the condition test but required a recharge, REFER to Charging System. CLEAR all CMDTCs (Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes). TEST the system for normal operation. If the battery passed the condition test and did not require a recharge, GO to F3.

No
INSTALL a new battery. CLEAR all CMDTCs (Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes). TEST the system for normal operation.

F3 CHECK THE CHARGING SYSTEM VOLTAGE

NOTE: Do not allow the engine rpm to increase above 2,000 rpm while performing this step or the generator may self-excite and result in default charging system output voltage. If engine rpm has gone above 2,000 rpm, shut the vehicle off and restart the engine before performing this step.

- Start the engine.

- Measure the voltage of the battery:
- Turn off all accessories and run the engine at 1,500 rpm for a minimum of 2 minutes.

Is the battery voltage between 13-15.2 volts?

Yes
GO to F4
No
REFER to Charging System to diagnose battery and charging system. TEST the system for normal operation.

F4 CHECK FOR CORRECT TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) OPERATION

- Disconnect all the TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) /VSM (Vehicle Security Module) electrical connectors.

- Check the connectors for:
- corrosion.
- pushed-out pins.
- spread terminals.

- Connect all the TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) /VSM (Vehicle Security Module) connectors and make sure that they are seated correctly.

Is the concern still present?

Yes
INSTALL a new TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) /VSM (Vehicle Security Module). REFER to Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) Module - 4-Door Sedan Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Module - 4-Door Sedan or Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) Module - 5-Door Hatchback Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Module - 5-Door Hatchback.
TEST the system for normal operation.

No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
