Power Windows Circuit Description

Power Windows Circuit Description

A permanent magnet motor operates each of the power windows. Each motor raises or lowers the glass when voltage is supplied to it. The direction the motor turns depends on the polarity of the supply voltage. The switches control the supply voltage polarity.

Each motor is protected by a built in circuit breaker. If a window switch is held too long with the window obstructed, or after the window is fully up or down, the circuit breaker opens the circuit. The circuit breaker resets automatically after it cools.

With the ignition switch in the RUN position, battery voltage is supplied to all the window switches through the power window relay.

CKT 164 (DK BLU) wire supplies battery voltage to the window motor when the left window switch is in the UP position. The window motor is grounded through the down contacts of the window switch. When the switch is in the DOWN position, battery voltage is supplied to the window motor through the CKT 165 (BRN). The window motor is grounded through the up contacts of the window switch.

The right hand window switches operate independently of the left window switch. The power window relay supplies battery voltage to the window switches. When the passenger right window switch is in the UP position, current is provided to the motor to CKT 666 (DK BLU). The motor is grounded through CKT 667 (BRN), the down contacts of the RH power window switch, CKT 167 (TAN), and the down contacts of the RH driver's power window switch. When the RH power window switch is in the down position, current is provided to the motor through CKT 667 (BRN). The motor is grounded through the DK BLU (666) wire, the up contacts of the RH power window switch, CKT 166 (DK BLU/WHT), and the up contacts of the RH driver's power window switch.
