Linear Shift - Assemble

Assembly Procedure

Tools Required
- J 41396 Park Lock Cable Pliers





1. Install the linear shift assembly and secure using 3 flat head 6 lobed socket tap screws.
Tighten the 3 flat head 6 lobed socket tap screws to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
2. If installing a broken down linear shift assembly, proceed to the next step.

Important: Lubricate all of the moving parts of the linear shift assembly with synthetic grease.





3. Install the gear shift lever assembly support bracket onto the steering column support assembly.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

4. Screw the 3 flat head tapping screws into the gear shift lever assembly.
Tighten the 3 flat head tapping screws to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).





5. Insert the cam bushing (2) into the cable shift cam assembly (1).
6. Install the cable shift cam assembly (1) into the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.
7. Screw the hexagon flange head bolt into the cable shift cam assembly (1).
Tighten the hexagon flange head bolt to 18 Nm (14 ft. lbs.).





8. Install the park lock cable assembly onto the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.
9. Screw the 3 oval head 6-lobed socket tapping screws into the shift gate and park lock cable assembly.
Tighten the 3 oval head 6-lobed socket tapping screws to 6.5 Nm (58 inch lbs.).





10. Install the shift lever clevis (1) into the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.
11. Install the ball actuator assembly (2) onto the gear shift lever assembly.
12. Install the hexagon flange head bolt into the gear shift lever assembly.
Tighten the hexagon flange head bolt to 18 Nm (14 ft. lbs.).
13. To install the linear shift assembly as an assembly, proceed to the next step.





14. Connect the park lock cable assembly (1) to the lock module assembly in the following way:
- Place the steering column lock cylinder set into the off position.
- Place the shift lever clevis into the park position.
- Press the locking tab on the end of the park lock cable (1) into the slot in the lock module assembly.





15. Adjust the park lock cable assembly.
15.1. Use the shift lever clevis to put the column in the park position.
15.2. Put the ignition switch in the off-lock position. Remove the key.
15.3. Unlock the adjuster ring (1) on the park lock cable assembly with J 41396.
15.4. Pull on the cable until the park lock latch contacts the shift lever clevis. Release the cable.
15.5. Lock the adjuster ring (1) securely in place on the park lock cable assembly with J 41396.
16. Inspect the park lock cable assembly.
16.1. Put the lock cylinder in the off-lock position. The shift lever clevis should not be able to shift out of the park position.
16.2. Turn the key to the run position and put the shift lever clevis in the neutral position.
16.3. With the shift lever clevis in the neutral position the lock cylinder should not be able to go into the off-lock position.
16.4. Put the shift lever clevis into the park position.
16.5. Put the lock cylinder in the off-lock position and then remove the key.





17. Install the electrical BTSI actuator.
Install the shift lever clevis and put the column in the neutral position.





18. Adjust the electrical BTSI actuator.
18.1. Pull the tab (1) out on the adjuster block side (2) of the electrical BTSI actuator.
18.2. Press on the adjuster block (2) to compress the internal adjuster spring to disengage the adjuster teeth. Slide the adjuster block (2) as far away from the solenoid as possible.
18.3. Lock in place by pushing the tab (1) back in.
19. Inspect the electrical BTSI actuator.
19.1. The electrical BTSI actuator must lock the shift lever clevis when it is put into the park position.
19.2. When the column is installed in the vehicle you will not be able to shift the gear shift lever out of the park position without pressing on the brake pedal. The solenoid will be energized.
19.3. Readjust if needed.
20. Install the upper and lower shrouds. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers - Assemble - Off Vehicle.
