Alternator: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the ground wire from the batteries negative terminal.
2. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
3. Disconnect the alternator wire harness connector by removing the locking tabs on both sides with a screwdriver and remove the terminal nut.
4. Remove the alternator adjustment bolt and nut, then remove the alternator belt from the pulley.

Alternator Attachment:

5. For fuel injected engines remove the air cleaner case and intake manifold B
6. Remove the alternator through bolt, then remove the alternator.

INSTALLATION
1. Install in reverse order of removal.
2. Adjust the alternator belt tension.

Belt Adjustment:

3. Adjust the alternator by applying a force of 20 - 24 lb. (90 - 110N) and measure the deflection as shown in the image.

DEFLECTION
Used belt: 0.28 - 0.39in. (7 - 10mm)
new belt: 0.24in. (6mm)
