Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Air Injection: Description and Operation

Fig. 46 Air Injection Control Wiring And Vacuum Hose Diagram:

The air injection system is used to allow fuel that did not burn during the power stroke to continue burning in the exhaust system. This is accomplished by introducing fresh air near the exhaust valve, thus giving the fuel more oxygen to burn with.
Air is supplied to the exhaust manifold through the air suction valve. When the air suction control solenoid valve is activated by the ECU, manifold vacuum raises the diaphragm of the air suction cut-off valve and fresh air from the air cleaner is induced to the exhaust manifold. The fresh air is induced to the exhaust stream by the pulsations of the exhaust. At low engine speeds, the exhaust stream is a series of high and low pressure pulses. The reed valve in the air suction valve blocks the high pressure pulses and lets fresh air in to fill the low pressure pulses.
The silencer, between the air cleaner and the air suction valve, reduces exhaust noise and the delay valve maintains the proper air/fuel ratio when shifting gears or during deceleration.
