Ignition Timing: Adjustments

Vacuum Advance Hoses:





1. Disconnect and plug vacuum advance hoses.

Timing Light Connection:





2. Connect a timing light with an advance tester to # 1 spark plug wire.

Timing Mark:





3. With engine at normal operating temperature, point timing light toward flywheel (M/T) or toward the drive plate (A/T).

4. Align the timing mark (White mark) to the pointer by using the advance tester.

INITIAL TIMING
(M/T) 4° BTDC at 800 +/- 50 RPM in neutral
(A/T) 4° BTDC at 750 +/- 50 RPM in neutral

Distributor Adjustment:





5. Adjust ignition timing by loosening the distributor hold down bolts. Turn the distributor counterclockwise to advance and clockwise to retard the ignition timing.

6. Tighten the distributor hold down bolts, reconnect the vacuum advance hoses, and recheck ignition timing.

7. Align the timing mark (Red mark) to the pointer by using the advance tester.

IGNITION TIMING CALIFORNIA
(M/T) 15° +/- 2° BTDC at 800 +/- 50 RPM in neutral
(A/T) 10° +/- 2° BTDC at 750 +/- 50 RPM in neutral

IGNITION TIMING FEDERAL
(M/T) 20° +/- 2° BTDC at 750 +/- 50 RPM in neutral
(A/T) 15° +/- 2° BTDC at 750 +/- 50 RPM in neutral

8. If ignition timing is not within specification refer to vacuum advance controls in the DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING PROCEDURES section.
