GENERAL INFORMATION
The Powertrain Management system consists of Sensors which detect engine operating conditions,an Engine Control Module (ECM) which controls the engine on the basis of sensor inputs, an Automatic Transmission control module which controls shift points based on vehicle load and speed, and actuators which operate under the commands of the control modules. The ECM controls the fuel injection, idle speed, ignition timing, etc.. In addition, the ECM is provided with 2 diagnostic test modes (DTM) to facilitate troubleshooting in case of failure. Alternatively, troubleshooting can be done using the Consult scan tool provided by Infiniti.

The ECM is designed with a "Fail-safe" feature. This mode of operation allows vehicle operation in a limited capacity even though certain sensors/components or their circuits failed.
