EGR Control Solenoid: Description and Operation

EGR Components:

PURPOSE
The Exhaust Gas Recirculation Control (EGRC) Solenoid Valve will either allow vacuum to pass to the Exhaust Gas Recirculation Control (EGR) Valve or vent the vacuum based on signals from the Engine Control Module (ECM).

OPERATION
If the ECM senses:
- Low engine coolant temperature
- Engine cranking
- High engine speed
- Engine idling
- Excessively high coolant temperature
it energizes the EGRC Solenoid. An energized solenoid will vent the vacuum signal and NOT allow EGR operation.

If the ECM senses any condition other than above, the EGRC Solenoid will be de-energized and allow vacuum to pass.

NOTE: A Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) No. 32 will be stored representing an EGR System Function Failure; if a failure in the EGR Control Solenoid circuit is detected by the ECM.
