Oxygen Sensor: Service and Repair

The pigtail and connector on the oxygen sensor are permanently attached and should not be removed. Removal of, or damage to, the pigtail or connector may affect proper operation of the sensor. When replacing the sensor, keep the inline electrical connector and louvered end free of grease or other contaminants, including cleaning solvents.
1. Disconnect electrical connector and any attaching hardware, then remove the sensor. Oxygen sensor may be difficult to remove if engine temperature is below 120°F. Do not use excessive force, as this may damage threads in exhaust manifold or exhaust pipe.
2. Reverse procedure to install. Torque sensor to 30 ft. lbs. New oxygen sensors are precoated with an anti-seize compound, however, if existing sensor is being reinstalled, coat its threads with a suitable anti-seize compound.
