Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

Knock Control

Knock Control

The ECM uses active knock control to prevent combustion knock damaging the engine. If the knock sensor inputs indicate the onset of combustion knock, the ECM retards the ignition timing for that particular cylinder by . If the combustion knock indication continues, the ECM further retards the ignition timing, in decrements of , for a maximum of 15° from where the onset of combustion knock was first sensed. When the combustion knock indication stops, the ECM restores the original ignition timing in increments of 0.75°.

To reduce the risk of combustion knock at high intake air temperatures, the ECM retards the ignition timing if the intake air temperature exceeds 55 °C (169 °F). The amount of ignition retard increases with increasing air intake temperature.
